Colombia, South America's northernmost coffee-producing country, is broadly diverse in climate, topography and ethnicity, and the coffee that originates from specific regions or states is equally as diverse in flavor, acidity, and sweetness - and quality as well. In the 16th century, Jesuit missionaries first brought coffee beans to the country of Colombia. The volcanic soil of the Andes Mountains, along with the mild temperatures and abundant rainfall of the Colombian topography, provided ideal growing conditions, enabling the coffee plants to flourish.
Coffee connoisseurs will delight in this unique collection of Specialty Coffees from Colombia. Cultivated and harvested in the remote and mountainous regions of Colombia, this collection offers but a glimpse of Colombia’s hidden riches.
In 1996, the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC) recognized the need to develop the Specialty Coffee segment and share the fruits of their efforts with the consumer. In order to achieve this, a special Research and Development Program was implemented. Due to the Federation’s unique "grass-roots" cooperative structure, this program was able to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the coffee growing areas and their respective fincas.
After traveling through Colombia’s vast countryside and thoroughly reviewing the extensive collection of data, the Federation began to pinpoint specific areas that would offer rare and unique profiles, as well as to establish their production potential. As with all of Colombia's coffee, the quality of the product remained first and foremost.
The local coffee-growing cooperatives and farmers played an active part during the developmental phase of the Specialty Coffees program. Today, they continue to be closely involved and remain integral to the success of the program.
As the program has continued to evolve, several outstanding cup profiles have been identified. Currently, the Federation is highlighting four singular coffees, whose availability and strict quality attributes have proven to be consistent over time. Hence, in 1999, the Federation is proud to offer this selected market the following community-specific Specialty Coffees of Colombia.
Colombia's Specialty Coffees are produced by a dedicated group of coffee farmers (cafeteros) with diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultural traditions. These cafeteros rely on traditional production practices, using predominantly old Arabica varieties that continue to flourish in small farms, constantly shaded by the mountain’s trees.
All Specialty Coffees from Colombia are diligently washed and carefully sun and air-dried by the hardworking cafeteros.
Colombia Andeano is grown in the southern Valle del Cauca region near El Aquila, El Cairo, Alcaia and Caicedonia. The Valle del Cauca region is located in Southwestern Colombia and is crossed by two magnificent mountain ranges that are part of the Andean Mountains. The rich quality of the soil and the variety of micro-climates found in this region make Valle del Cauca one of the main coffee producing areas of Colombia. Grown at high elevations of 4593-5905 feet above sea level and bursting with aromas of flowers and cinnamon, this is a superb coffee that can stand among the highest rank of Colombia's selected class of coffee.
